Plot

Yatora Yaguchi has always stood out among his best classmates. He studied well, and knowledge was given to him very easily; he saw the beauty of the city in the hour before dawn, when all buildings and streets are shrouded in blue… This picture delighted the guy so much that one day he drew it in an art lesson. Classmates entering the art club immediately noticed the depth of the drawing. And the teacher, looking at the picture, described in words the feelings with which its author wrote. Yatora put his soul into the work, his thoughts, which were easily read by the teacher herself! At that moment, the guy realized that he had found his calling.

But how can he admit to himself and to the whole world that thanks to painting, which as a profession can bring neither fame nor money, Yatora felt alive? He heard his heartbeat, he was possessed by the thoughts of going to university, now he dreams of drawing. Unfortunately, only private art institutes are located in the city. The exception is Tokyo University of the Arts, where everyone can get without a lot of money. The main character does not intend to give up. Forward to your dream, Yatora!

• Yatora Yaguchi — a student of the school with excellent grades in all subjects; learns with ease, not getting any satisfaction either from studies or from life in general; spends all his free time with friends, drinks, smokes and watches football until the morning; Yatora realized that he began to live when he saw the beauty of the painted picture; often hides his true feelings and attitude towards someone.
• Ryuji Ayukawa / Yuka — member of the art club; very bright and energetic girl; invited Yatora to the club; initially, the relationship with Yatora did not work out at all, but then they became best friends.
• Maru Mori — Yuka’s friend who supports her all the time; painted a picture that Yatora admired, after which he first thought about this art form; student of Musashino Art University, which she later graduated from; prefers oil painting.

1. The anime “Blue Period” is based on the manga of the same name, first published in June 2017 in Monthly Afternoon by Kodansha. In September 2021, the 11th volume of the manga was released.
2. Some viewers reacted differently to the name of the anime, noting that there is a reference to homosexuality. However, art experts are in a hurry to reassure fans of the manga and the series. Most likely, we are talking about the “blue period” in the works of the popular Spanish artist Pablo Picasso. It covers the period from 1901 to 1904. Then the artist painted pictures mainly in blue tones. It is about the exhibition of works by Picasso that is mentioned in the first episode of the anime.
3. The name of the protagonist Yatora from Japanese can be translated as follows: “Ya” — eight, “tora” — tiger. And the surname Yaguchi means: “Ya” — an arrow, “guchi” — a mouth or entrance.
